What’s Better, Fixed Braces Or Removable?

This is very much a loaded question as which brace will be the best for your case will depend on the severity of your teeth. Orthodontics has come on in leaps and bounds over the past few years and as a result, certain types of braces have been designed for specific tooth correctional needs.

Benefits of Fixed Braces

Fixed braces tend to be the more traditional type of brace that has been used in the past. However, modern day fixed braces have been designed and developed with more emphasis of comfort in mind so the patient can get the benefits of straighter teeth, but without a lot of the pain that was often associated with braces. Newer systems are less bulky and can also be more discrete as well. The damon brace in particular uses a self ligating system which means the archwire is allowed to freely move in the bracket – meaning less friction and more comfort for the patient. The more traditional method to move the archwire required elastics which often caused friction and pain.

Orthodontics systems have also come on in terms of aesthetics as well. A lot of the fixed options now have a clear alternative that really blends in with your smile e.g. 6 month smiles, Damon clear etc. A very popular fixed system is known as lingual braces. These are fixed to the backs of your teeth and are 100% invisible!

Benefits of Removable Braces

Even though the fixed counterparts have come on a long way, some patients still prefer to have removable braces as they find it fits into their life better. Removable braces do work technically in a different manner to the fixed braces but they can still provide very good results. These types of braces tend to be aimed at the less severe cases.

Some of the popular removable braces we offer include: Invisalign, Inman Aligner etc. Invisalign in particular is a system that comprises of invisible clear aligners to gently correct patients teeth.
