If you have lost some of your teeth one of the gap management options which may be suitable is partial dentures. These are dentures that will replace only a partial area of your mouth, and will fit alongside your remaining teeth. Like all dentures, the partial dentures can be custom made out of a variety of material and we will discuss the various suitable options to you at the free consultation.

When getting any form of denture, one of the most common questions to ask is how the denture will be secured or fixed in place. One such method is through the use of precision clasps, that use your remaining teeth to hook on to. The downside to this method is that it is prone to loosening and they are not as well fitted as they could be. When making any denture it is very important to ensure that they are very precise and snug, as they will be a more comfortable and functional denture. Another way to secure the denture in place is known as the bridge denture. This is a fixed partial denture and will utilise the teeth adjacent to the gap. This does require those teeth to be prepared to allow for the crowns and bridge to be put in place.

The main types of materials used in partial dentures are either acrylic or metal. Different materials are better suited for different cases and we will explain what is suitable for you at the free consultation.

Do I Need a Partial Denture?

If you have lost a tooth or have multiple missing teeth, then a partial denture may be suitable for you. Losing teeth can occur due to natural factors such as ageing or can even be down to accidents. However you lose your teeth, it is important to effectively manage the gap well. This is so you have the functionality and aesthetics that are associated with having teeth.

If you are due to have teeth extracted your dentist will discuss the options to manage the gap afterwards, to limit the time you are without teeth. The first step to getting dentures will be to have primary impressions taken which are used to make special trays at the laboratory. Secondary impressions will then be taken in the special tray which will give your dentist more accurate measurements for your new denture. When you first have your completed denture to be worn it may be uncomfortable at first but it is very important it is worn initially to help stop your remaining teeth from shifting following an extraction. It is quite common to also need a reline once you have your denture so tiny adjustments can be made to ensure it is comfortable and precise for you.

Keeping Your Denture Clean

Your denture is very important and will need the same level of care as your natural teeth would. Daily cleaning is always recommended and there is even cleaners that can be bought specifically for dentures.

When cleaning you need to always take care as they can become slippy and fall from your hand. They are very delicate when dropped from a height and can easily break. We recommend putting down a soft towel in the basin to catch them in case they are dropped.

I contacted Ascent Dental Care after my general dentist advised me that I needed root canal treatment, which they would be unable to carry out. I was looked after by Jesal, who put root canal fillings into 3 of my teeth, which was not a straightforward procedure, as they were crowned front teeth, and 2 of the crowns were some 25 years old. I can only say that he did an excellent job. He explained everything very thoroughly to me beforehand, and I was truly amazed at how little discomfort I felt when the work carried out. He is a really nice guy, who puts you totally at ease, and the nurses, reception and admin staff are all very friendly, polite and efficient.
