What Is Dental Sedation?

Dental sedation can help patients overcome their fear and anxieties that they experience during dental treatment. At our practice we have been trained to offer an IV (intravenous) sedation that we will gently administer into our patients arm. This type of sedation won’t fully knock out the patient (as dental practices are not allowed to do so), but it will make the whole experience turn into a blur and the patient will be unable to recall the treatment, making it a very relaxed and calm experience.

After being scared of dentist for many years I booked appointment with ascent dental as I read they do iv sedation for nervous patients, yesterday I completed my course of treatment and everyone from the dentist and sedationist to the girls on reception were absolutely wonderful, all so kind and caring and made sure I was ok throughout. Brilliant dental practice would definitely recommend them to everyone.

Nice and Calm and Relaxed

Here’s one of our resident dentists, Shiv, to answer FAQs about gentle, relaxing sedation for nervous or anxious patients.

What Happens To Me Once I Have Been Sedated?

We will carefully and gently administer the IV sedation so you feel relaxed and unaware of what is going on. We will then begin to start the treatment once you have entered this unaware state. We will monitor your breathing and pulse throughout the treatment to ensure that you are always safe and comfortable. During the treatment you will be able to respond to any of our questions but you won’t have any memory of the treatment after – it will be a hazy blur (which you will need a chaperon to take you home safely).

I would like to thank Ascent dental care team for helping me through my treatment. Very professional and friendly team 🙂

I am really really scared of dentist and they gave me choice of sedation which I went for. No stress no pain. Highly recommend ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Why Won’t I Be Able To Remember The Treatment?

  • Dental sedation will make the patient enter a very deep state of relaxation and will be blissfully unaware of what is happening
  • For the short period of your dental treatment, the IV sedation can give complete or partial loss of memory, enabling you to get through the treatment quickly, safely and calmly

After the treatment you will struggle to remember any of the treatment and it will have been as if you were asleep the entire time!

Dental Sedation Frequently Asked Questions

Is it general anesthetic?

No. General anesthetic are used at hospitals to put patients fully under. Dental practices are not allowed to offer general anesthetic. Contact us to find out more about our dental sedation. We use a sedative that means you are awake but you won’t be aware of what is going on around you.

Will it hurt?

No. During the treatment you will be awake, but you won’t be aware or conscious of what is happening, any of the sounds or feeling will be a complete blur and you will not be able to remember the treatment.

Can I go to work the same day or after?

After you have had treatment under IV sedation we always recommend that your chaperon takes you home, and you are not left alone (you will be unable to have sedation without someone to take you home). The effects of the sedation will have worn off and you will be able to work the next day.

Do you still use local anaesthetic?

The IV sedative will be administered to the patients arm and a numbing local anesthetic is used to numb the gums.

What treatments can be carried out under sedation?

We have experienced patients who are extremely nervous about all aspects of dentistry and the thought of sitting in the dental chair is too much for them. Because of this, we are able to offer sedation for the majority of treatments (including):

  • General dentistry (e.g. fillings, scale & polish etc)
  • Dental Implants
  • Oral Surgery
  • Cosmetic dental treatment (e.g. Veneers & Crowns)
