How Do Sweets Affect My Teeth?

Back to posts

Sweets contain lots of sugar as 90% of them are made up of sugar. The sugar in sweets is not only bad for your health, as if it doesn’t get burned off will turn into fat, but is also very bad for your teeth. This is because it causes tooth decay which then leads to cavities. Most people think that junk food such as sweets and fizzy drinks are the only causes of tooth decay, however they are wrong. Even healthy foods and drinks such as fruit juices and dried fruits contain just as much or sometimes even more sugar than sweets.

Everybody has bacteria that lives in their mouth. This bacteria is present in your mouth at all times, and can form plaque on your teeth. By consuming sugar the bacteria in the plaque will eat all the sugar that you have consumed and turn it into acid. The acid produced is harmful enough to dissolve the hard enamel layer of your teeth causing you to get cavities.
