What Are Amalgam Fillings?

Amalgam are the traditional materials that were commonly used to fill any holes or cavities in your teeth. The two main downsides to these types of fillings is the fact that they contained mercury (which could pose a health risk if it leaks), and that they don’t look very appealing in the mouth.

At our practice we are equipped to safely remove and dispose of any amalgam fillings you may have. We will then be able to carefully replace the holes with a more natural and friendly composite material, which also blends in with your teeth.

Mercury Filling Concerns

In modern day dental practices, there is a lot of concern and controversy that surrounds the use of amalgam fillings. This controversy has been heightened in certain Scandinavian and European countries, that it has even lead to being a banned filling.

There is no conclusive evidence however, to say that you are any more exposed to mercury than you are in every day life. The majority of dentists in the UK will offer a combination of both amalgam fillings and white composite fillings.

At Tamworth Dental & Implant Clinic we are a strong advocate of white fillings over amalgam.

Can expand with age, potentially cracking teeth

Protective seal may fade away, causing them to decay
Tooth discolouration may occur
Contains a harmful substance (mercury)
To fit the filling, healthy parts of teeth may need to be removed to create space
Some patients might have an allergy to amalgam

White Fillings

This patient had a large silver metal filling which created a dark shadow on the outside of the tooth. This was replaced with a white filling to improve the strength and aesthetics of this tooth.

This patient came to us with a failing silver filling. Alongside this they were also unhappy with the appearence of the filling. It was replaced with a white filling material to restore the tooth back to health and improve the cosmetic look of the tooth.

I had been advised by my previous dentist that implants were probably not an option for me after losing several teeth. I decided to pursue looking for an implant specialist in the Tamworth area where I now lived. Finding Ascent and reading the very positive reviews I arranged a free consultation with Faresh. After a very informative discussion a treatment plan was put together for me detailing all the options available.

I was delighted to know that in fact I was suitable for implants and made a decision to go ahead. I was guided by Faresh and his team as to what would happen at each stage of my treatment plan. My implant journey began in December 2020 during Covid times and everyone at the practice were meticulous with cleanliness procedures providing reassurance to the patients.

It is now April 2021 and my implants are in and looking and feeling AMAZING!! I can now smile once again with pride and confidence. It is one of the best things that I have done and thank Faresh and his exceptional team for the kindness care and guidance that I received.

I was booked for an emergency visit with Dr Jesal Savania, whom I would highly recommend. I had a wisdom tooth removal, which I didn’t expect to happen on the day of the visit. I had a similar procedure done 10 years ago, which was very painful and traumatic. Dr Savania is a compassionate, professional dentist who calmed me down and he did the procedure in record time, with absolutely no pain.
