An overview of dentures

Dentures are essentially teeth which are removable and normally made of a substance such as metal, plastic or nylon. Dentures are clever because they fit in the space over the gums to act in the same way as normal teeth. Dentures can require a little bit of getting used to when first fitted but many people soon adjust. Normal practice after having new ones fitted is to wear them day and night for procedural reasons. Some people like to take their dentures out at night. Whilst this isn’t mandatory it can help parts of the mouth like the gums relax while your mould is not present. If you do plan to remove your dentures then never allow them to dry out, as this can alter the shape. Keep them moist and place them in some kind of denture cleaning fluid to preserve.

It is important to remember to keep your dentures clean aswell as your mouth generally in the normal way. You will also be required to brush your dentures and look after them just the same as a set of teeth. Remember that having dentures does not cease to mean you don’t need to visit the dentist anymore either!

Like wearing them, eating can be a little strange at first, and it is best to start with small and soft foods until you get used to the sensations. Build up to your normal diet slowly but this shouldn’t take too long. Avoid chewing gum and toothpicks for obvious reasons.

The topic of using adhesive with dentures regularly arises. If the dentures fit properly then there is no need to use anything as the mould should sit comfortably. Adhesive may be required if your mouth changes shape over time, or just simply if you feel more confident having it present.
