Gum disease is a very common condition in the UK, and has affected more than half of all adults. Gum disease is when your gums become infected, sore or swollen, and start to bleed. There are other conditions that can be associated with gum disease such as, gingivitis. This is when the gums bleed after brushing and you may develop bad breath. If gingivitis is not treated it will then turn into a condition which is know as periodontitis, which can affect the tissue that holds the tooth in place, and if untreated, may mean that you could lose your tooth or teeth.

Research has estimated that almost half of all adults in the UK, will have suffered from some form of gum disease at one point or another in their lives. The medical name for gum disease is Periodontal disease, and this is when your gums, and the tissue surrounding them are affected in a way that can cause your gums to bleed, or cause you to have bad breath. This is why it is so important to keep your teeth and gums as healthy as possible and visit a dentist regularly, as excessive gum disease can result the severe case of tooth loss.
How Will I Know If I Need Periodontal Treatment?
Periodontal disease is more commonly known as gum disease. This is when the gums and teeth have developed an infection that causes the gums to become inflamed and sore, often bleeding.
If you are showing signs of gum disease, it is advised that you seek out advice from your dentist so they can examine the signs and symptoms, and give advice on if any further treatment is needed.

Periodontics is the branch of dentistry that focuses on the treatment of periodontal disease, most commonly known as gum disease. Gum disease can be a serious condition that if left untreated, can cause your teeth to eventually start to fall out. The most common signs to look out for are bleeding & sore gums. If you brush too hard during your oral hygiene routine, you can sometimes cause accidental bleeding.
