If you have experienced a large amount of pain associated to a particular tooth, it may be that it has suffered from a deep infection which has worked its way down to the pulp of the tooth. The pulp is the nerve of the tooth and can cause a serious amount of pain with a serious infection. Depending on the severity of the infection, in the worst case scenario, the tooth may be un-saveable and an extraction may be the best course of action.
At our clinic we are strong advocates of preserving and saving natural teeth for as long as possible, as nothing will ever compare to natural teeth (even though modern restorations have come on along way). We will only ever extract teeth as a last resort and will always opt to save the tooth if possible.
What Is A Root Canal?
Root canals are when we will clear the decay and infection out of the tooth, so the infection is stopped before it attacks other teeth or your gums. By clearing out the infection, we will then be able to do a root filling which will fill the area that was badly infected, and stop any further infection or decay from happening.
