Do I Need Periodontal Treatment?

Back to posts

Periodontal treatment refers to the treatment of gum disease. Gum disease is a condition that actively attacks your gums and teeth, and has also been linked to other health conditions (such as coronary disease).

Common Symptoms

One of the most common symptoms associated with gum disease is bleeding gums. Everyone who has bleeding gums won’t necessarily have gum disease, but everyone who does have gum disease will have bleeding gums. There are a number of reasons why your gums may bleed, and the one major cause for concern is an inflammation and infection of the gums, that causes bleeding. An inflammation of the gums is caused by a build up of bacteria in your mouth in which over time, will turn to a substance known as plaque (and eventually calculus and tartar). As bacteria builds up in your mouth it can cause an irritated area in your mouth which can get progressively worse over time.

What Can I Do?

One of the best ways to keep your mouth healthy and fit is to practice a healthy and consistent oral hygiene routine. What this means is, by brushing at least twice a day with regular use of mouth wash and flossing, will help to tackle any build up of the bacteria. Even with a regular oral hygiene routine, it can be hard to eliminate all of the bacteria and build up, but you can significantly reduce it. It is recommended that you do attend regular 6 monthly check ups and visits to the dental hygienist, as they will spot any potential future problems and catch them before the disease turns into advanced gum disease.

If you are worried you may be suffering from gum disease please do not hesitate to contact us and book your check up today.
