Gum disease is a very common condition in the UK, and has affected more than half of all adults. Gum disease is when your gums become infected, sore or swollen, and start to bleed. There are other conditions that can be associated with gum disease such as, gingivitis. This is when the gums bleed after brushing and you may develop bad breath. If gingivitis is not treated it will then turn into a condition which is know as periodontitis, which can affect the tissue that holds the tooth in place, and if untreated, may mean that you could lose your tooth or teeth.
What Causes Gum Disease?
There is a sticky substance called plaque that causes gum disease. Plaque is formed after you eat and drink and is made up of bacteria. Brushing you teeth at least twice a day and using a mouthwash, will help remove the plaque, from your teeth and gums so that it doesn’t cause swelling and soreness, resulting in gum disease.
Preventing and Treating Gum Disease
If you keep a good level of oral hygiene, such as brushing twice a day, flossing and using a mouthwash, you will be dramatically reducing your chances of developing gum disease. In addition visiting the hygienist regularly will help reduce your chances of gum disease, as they will clean your teeth professionally and advise you how to keep up good oral hygiene.
