How long do dental implants last?

The implant and the crown are different parts

• The implant is a small titanium post that fuses with your jawbone and replaces the tooth root.
• The crown is the visible tooth fitted on top. Like any crown, it can wear or chip over the years and may need replacing, without replacing the implant underneath.

What the research says

A 2019 systematic review in the Journal of Dentistry (Howe, Keys and Richards) pooled long-term studies of modern implants. The standard estimate was that 96.4% of implants were still in place after 10 years. A more cautious analysis, allowing for patients who dropped out of the studies, gave 93.2%. Figures were a little lower in people aged 65 and over. These are averages; your own outlook depends on your health and how you care for your implant.

What affects how long implants last

• Gum health and cleaning. Infection of the gum and bone around an implant (peri-implantitis) is a main cause of problems later on, so daily cleaning and hygienist visits matter.
• Smoking. Smoking increases the risk of implant problems.
• Diabetes. Well-controlled diabetes needn’t stop you having implants, but poor control raises the risk.
• Grinding or clenching. A night guard can protect implants and crowns.
• Bone and planning. Enough healthy bone and careful positioning help implants last. If bone is thin, a bone graft may be needed first (from £1,365 at our Tamworth practice).

How to look after your implants

• Brush twice a day, and clean between your teeth with interdental brushes, floss or a water flosser.
• See your dentist and hygienist regularly so problems are caught early.
• Don’t use your teeth to open packets or bottles.
• Wear a night guard if you grind your teeth.
• If you smoke, ask us about support to stop.

When to get an implant checked

Contact us if the gum around an implant bleeds, looks swollen or tastes unpleasant, if the crown feels loose, or if it’s uncomfortable to bite on.

Do dental implants last forever? No treatment can be guaranteed to last forever, but many implants last for decades with good care. The crown on top may need replacing at some point.
