The causes behind severe toothache

Back to posts

If you have recently found yourself suffering with toothache, you are not alone. Toothache is a common problem amongst adults and children alike. The most common causes behind this are usually down to an infected or cracked tooth. However, that’s not to say they are the only possibilities for toothache being bought on. In this article, we will look at the different causes behind tooth decay, so we can help you to understand and combat it more effectively.

What are the causes?

Tooth decay

Commonly referred to as ‘cavities’, these are a very common cause behind toothache. If you are experiencing pain on the top or sides of your teeth, it is most likely down to a cavity. Cavities only start to become noticeably painful when an infection is developing. Therefore, it is important to see your dentist as soon as possible if you have developed these symptoms, before the issue gets any worse.

Exposure to cold or hot temperatures

If your teeth are already sensitive, hot or cold food and drinks may exacerbate the situation further. Exposed nerve endings and worn-down enamel can leave your teeth very sensitive and consuming products with hot or cold temperatures can result in a sharp pain, and possibly cause further damage to your teeth.

Gum recession

Receding gums become more of a common problem as you get older. It refers to the gums slowly pulling away from your teeth over a long period of time. When this happens, the roots and nerve endings of your teeth become more exposed, increasing the risk of gum disease and infections developing.

Cracked tooth or crown

A cracked tooth can inflict some serious pain, especially if left untreated. Some cracks may even be too small to see, but can still cause a lot of damage and discomfort. It is best to see a dentist if you cannot immediately identify the cause behind your toothache, as there is a good chance that a cracked tooth or crown could be behind it.

Enamel erosion

The erosion of enamel can occur from a variety of different factors, such as a very acidic diet or brushing your teeth too hard. As a result of this, the enamel on your teeth is eroded away and isn’t replaced. This can lead to a condition known as ‘dentin hypersensitivity’. When this happens, you will notice a sharp, stabbing pain in your gums, especially when you bite into hard food.

When to seek medical help

You should get in contact with either your dentist or doctor when the following symptoms persist:

*Pain caused after surgery such as a dental implant
