Dental Hygiene and the role of a Dental Hygienist

Brushing and flossing your teeth daily is very important to maintain your oral health, mouth, gums and teeth. The more consistent and regular you can maintain your oral hygiene routine, you will be less likely to develop complications in the future, and you will keep your natural teeth for longer. A good oral hygiene routine can help to fight off the bacteria and protect your teeth from the chances of cavities and gum disease developing.

However, brushing & flossing alone will not always tackle the stubborn build up of plaque on your teeth. It is recommended that every 6 months you visit a dental hygienist who will use professional hygiene tools to tackle those stubborn plaque deposits and clean your teeth professionally.

By regularly attending both dentist visits and hygienist visits, we will be able to spot any early signs of potential problems, treating them before they progress into more complicated problems.

Why See a Dental Hygienist?

Oral hygiene is a very important process to maintain your teeth, at home and with a hygienist. Oral care is very important to be done on a daily basis to help protect and care for your teeth. However, there will be some areas of the teeth that are more difficult to clean and will require a professional clean from the hygienist.

As plaque builds up it will become tougher and tougher to remove. Eventually the plaque will form into an even tougher substance known as calculus or tartar (plaque that is calcified), which is too tough to remove with conventional brushing. The dental hygienist will be able to tackle this build up with a scale and a polish.

What’s The Recommended Daily Oral Hygiene Routine

We recommend that you practice the follow routine daily:

Brush a minimum of twice a day, for a minimum of two minutes each time. Brush slow and not too hard.
Brush all your teeth
Floss for a minimum of once a day to tackle any stuck food particles. Do not floss to hard as it can cause your gums to bleed

*Please note, any signs of blood during this routine can be a symptom of gum disease and will need checking over

What’s Different Between a Dentist & Hygienist?

Dental hygienists are dental professionals who have trained specifically to deal with ensuring you maintain your oral hygiene. Hygienists will use hygiene tools that have been designed to tackle a build up stubborn plaque. As well as cleaning your teeth, the hygienists role is to educate you on best practices for oral hygiene. If you require additional cleaning to maintain your hygiene levels, the hygienist may recommend certain products to help you.

I had been advised by my previous dentist that implants were probably not an option for me after losing several teeth. I decided to pursue looking for an implant specialist in the Tamworth area where I now lived. Finding Ascent and reading the very positive reviews I arranged a free consultation with Faresh. After a very informative discussion a treatment plan was put together for me detailing all the options available.

I was delighted to know that in fact I was suitable for implants and made a decision to go ahead. I was guided by Faresh and his team as to what would happen at each stage of my treatment plan. My implant journey began in December 2020 during Covid times and everyone at the practice were meticulous with cleanliness procedures providing reassurance to the patients.

It is now April 2021 and my implants are in and looking and feeling AMAZING!! I can now smile once again with pride and confidence. It is one of the best things that I have done and thank Faresh and his exceptional team for the kindness care and guidance that I received.
