What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is the term used to describe the process that occurs when a person is sleeping, and there is an interruption of airflow into their lungs (aka Obstructive Sleep Apnea).

How Does OSA Occur?

OSA will only occur as a person is sleeping, because the airways muscles can relax, where as, when we are awake, their will be sufficient muscle to allow for continued normal breathing.

When sleep apnea occurs, your brain will cause a reaction so you wake up (often in the form of a loud snore or snort). Normal breathing will commence until it happens again.

OSA sufferers will quite often wake up many times during the night and can feel very tired the following day.

Am I Suffering From Sleep Apnea?

Most other symptoms may generally be picked up by your partner, family and friends first – Including:

Loud snoring – with interruptions of gasping and long pauses
Headaches in the morning
Short temperament and irritability
Daytime sleepiness (excessive)
Reduced LibidoAnxiety or depression
Forgetfulness
Mood swings

Please note that the above symptoms can still be experienced by people who do not suffer from sleep apnea to. But OSA suffers may experience multiple of the above symptoms and can even have them all.

The biggest symptom to really check out for is any loud and excessive snoring that has constant gasps and pauses.

How Is OSA Diagnosed?

An Apnoea/Hypopnoea index has been developed to identify how severe a persons case is. It is used to monitor how many Apnoeas (suspension of external breathing) and Hypopnoeas (slow breathing or abnormal breathing) occur per hour during sleep.

If the score is less than 10 on the index, it is unlikely to be diagnosed as a clinical problem.

Everyone at the practice from the women on reception to the 3 practitioners I have had treatment from have been amazing. They have all made me feel respected, reassured and safe, the care and quality of treatment from the practitioners has been excellent. They have explained everything very clearly and listened to my concerns and answered all my questions. Also, I can honestly say that the treatment has been painless. I will never look forward to visiting the dentist but I am much more reassured that I will be taken care of and my dental care is in the safest and most professional hands!

If like me you have had bad experiences in the past then this is the place to come to.I have been coming here now for two years to finally get the smile i am proud of.I had root canals carried out by Dr Jessal his skill and knowledge is amazing he is clearly at the very top of his profession,i never suffered any pain during or after and returned back to work that same day i can not thank him enough.

A short time after it was time for my crown work to begin and this was carried out by Dr Gursh who whitened my teeth and sorted out my new crowns which look so natural against my other teeth and a perfect fit first time,another top professional who cares and is passionate about getting that perfect smile, you cannot tell they are crowns amazing.
