What Are Permanent Dentures?

Historically when you looked at replacing full sets of teeth, you would be presented with the options of having dentures. Dentures are a removable option that are custom made to fit your gum/bone ridges. Over time it is natural for your mouth to change shape (due to bone loss) and that your once well fitting denture is needing to be relined. A reline can be a simple case of adjusting the base of the denture so it fits your mouth accurately again. This will be an on going process as our mouths, bone and gums are constantly changing. How quick this affects us does vary from patient to patient.

Permanent Dentures

When we talk about permanent dentures, we are talking about securing them in place through dental implants. Implants are placed into your jaw bone and will act as the new roots of your teeth and will anchor them in place.

This will offer the stability and security you need to get on with your daily life without having to worry about your teeth falling out.

The process of getting implants will take longer, as there is a lot of planning required before placing the implants. Once the implants have been placed there will also be a healing period, to allow the bone to bond with the implants. The length of time it takes to complete the case will vary depending on the complexity of the case. A typical case can be completed over a 3-6 month period from start to finish.

When a denture is fitted to the implants, the common term for this type of treatment is known as an overdenture.
